International Tchaikovsky Competition
The International Tchaikovsky Competition, held every four years in Moscow, is one of the world’s great classical music performance competitions. For the fourteenth competition, to be held in 2011, Maestro Valery Gergiev was brought on as chairman and Richard Rodzinski, formerly the head of the Van Cliburn Piano Competition, was hired as senior adviser to help bring the Tchaikovsky Competition to the level of prestige it enjoyed in past decades.
As part of the renewal effort, Chermayeff & Geismar was engaged to design a completely new graphic identity for the competition. Drawing on the dynamism and beauty of classical performance, we created a symbol that elegantly suggests a number of musical associations: the five lines on a staff, the curves in a clef, the radiation of sound waves, and the lyrical flow of music.
